Top Earners

Who are the top earners at Manchester City? Kevin de Bruyne receives the fattest paycheck from the club, which is £375ka week. The PFA Player of the Year will be a Man City player until 2023.

He is also the most saleable asset in the team. The Belgian has established himself as one of the best players in the world. Tranfermarkt estimates his market value at £100m.

Sergio Aguero is the next name on the Man City player wages list. He takes home £280k per week. The club is yet to renew his contract, That means, the Argentine is set to walk for free at the end of this season.

The 32-year-old has been a loyal employee for the club. He has scored 180 times in 263 appearances for Man City. He is the club’s all-time highest goalscorer.

Raheem Sterling sits third in the Manchester City top earners table. He makes £180k a week and his current contract is valid until 2023. The former Liverpool man can operate as a striker or a winger.

Sterling, who joined the club in 2015, signed a contract extension in 2018 with improved terms. His original contract was scheduled to run out in 2020.

Ilkay Gundogan earns £160k a week and he has a contract until 2023 as well. Chances have been few and far between for him after Rodri’s arrival, but he is still one of the club’s highest earners.

Kyle Walker, on the other hand, has solidified his position as the first choice right-back despite competition from Joao Cancelo. Walker earns £130k a week with still four years left on his contract.

Rodri (£120k), Nicolas Otamendi (£130k), Riyad Mahrez (£120k), Gabriel Jesus (£100k) and Nathan Ake (£100k) are the other players who earn £100k a week or more.

Man City Wage Bill in Recent Seasons

As of writing, Man City player wages total £275 million. Do keep in mind, that this would change following arrivals and departures. Players like Nicolas Otamendi leaving would free up more than £6m in annual wage expenses.

Last year, the wage bill was £260m.  However, it is drastically less than the £315.3m the club had reported in 2018/19. The club has successfully managed to trim it down with player sales in following seasons.

Manchester City Transfer Spendings

Pep Guardiola’s first season at Manchester City was far from ideal. After enjoying amazing success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the Spaniard was expected to take the Premier League by storm upon his arrival.

But, the newly appointed Manchester City manager realised that he needs the right personnel to implement his philosophy at the club. In his first season, City had to stay content with a third-place finish.

Having won the Premier League twice in the previous five seasons, it was not the result the club hierarchy was hoping for. On top of that, the Sky Blues failed to lift any trophies that season.

The club sanctioned a sizable transfer war chest for Guardiola the following season. He had spent£200 million to bring the likes of Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, and Danilo in 2017.

And it paid off marvellously. City went on to win the Premier League in the following season. And the season after that, they followed it up with completing an unprecedented domestic quadruple.

Last season, they fell short to Jurgen Klopp’s dynamic Liverpool side in the title race. But, they still managed to clinch a trophy as they won the League Cup.

However, success in Europe is still elusive for the Manchester club. Last season, they lost to Lyon in the UCL quarter-finals, despite being favourites to go all the way.

Guardiola has spent more than£600 million after his appointment at Manchester City. As they keep their sight set on the ultimate prize of European silverware, we are expecting that number to increase.

Manchester City Transfers 2020/21

Manchester City has lost their German winger Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich this season. Even though the transfer was made official this season, Sane didn’t feature for City after the lockdown.

The club tried their best to keep hold of Sane. But, the former Schalke man was adamant to return to his homeland and pursue regular football. The Bavarians paid €45 million for him, who had cost City €52m million in 2016.

However, that was not necessarily a bad deal for the Citizens considering the circumstances. The pandemic has had a severe impact on player valuations across Europe and Sane was on the final year of his contract.

The club also said goodbye to longtime servant David Silva. Silva left on a free after a decade of success at the club to join Lazio. Undoubtedly, he had cemented his status as a Manchester City legend.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had also left the club for free. Unlike Silva, he failed to leave much of a positive impact on the club. He will be playing for Real Betis this season.

In terms of arrivals, Manchester City has signed Nathan Ake from Bournemouth for €45 million. The other notable summer signing was Ferran Torress from Valencia, who has a price tag of €23m.

The club also spent more than €20m to secure the services of Pablo Moreno, Yan Couto, and Issa Kaboure. But, none of them is expected to feature predominantly for the senior side this season.

As of writing, the club is still active in the transfer market and desperately trying to sign another centre-back. Kalidou Koulibaly and Ruben Dias are their primary targets.

Manchester City New Signing: Nathan Ake

Nathan Ake is Manchester City’s latest defensive recruit and increased Man City salaries again.. The defender had joined the youth ranks of Chelsea as a 15-year-old. But, he never managed to become a mainstay at the London outfit’s senior side.

He actually stepped into the limelight while playing on loan at Bournemouth from Chelsea. His performance was so convincing that Chelsea recalled him midseason, but he didn’t get enough minutes there.

Ake then returned to Bournemouth on a permanent deal. Under Eddie Howe, the Dutchman had made 121 Premier League appearances. Therefore, Man City has got a player who is no stranger to this league.

Guardiola wants his centrebacks to be comfortable with the ball. Ake has shown that he is capable of transitioning the ball out of the back and move into wider areas when necessary.

Ake has signed a 5-year contract at the club that will expire in 2025. Over that he will constitute almost £5 million a year in Manchester City players salary expenses. He has a weekly wage of £100k.

Manchester City New Signing: Ferran Torres

Leroy Sane left a winger-shaped void in the Manchester City squad when he packed his bags for Bayern Munich. Ferran Torres comes as his immediate replacement.

Torres is yet to become a marquee name in the world of football, but he does have the potential to become one. Valencia were not in their best form last season, but Torres was caught the eye playing out wide.

He registered 6 goals and 7 assists in 35 matches last season. If you take into consideration that he had been playing for an underperforming team, these are very good numbers.

The 20-year-old is far from a finished article. But, Guardiola has a knack for bringing the best out of wingers. Ferran Torres could be the next uncut gem he polishes to perfection.

Torres was deployed as a right-side midfielder in a 442 setup last season. So, he had to balance his attacking duties with his defensive ones. Playing as a pure winger in a free-flowing system could make him lethal.

The Spain international has penned a contract that will keep him at Manchester City until 2025. He will make £45k a week, which will round up to £2.45 million in base salary this year.

Manchester City Finances

According to the financial report released by Manchester City for the 2018/19 season, the club had generated record revenues in their history. The amount was a whopping £535.2 million.

The club also reported a profit of £10.1 million, which suggests that the club is heading towards financial independence. Of course, the pandemic will hamper this process, but it is a step in the right direction.

However, the club was accused of financial irregularities and was handed a Champions League ban by the UEFA. But, the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) overturned the ban.

However, it is evident that Manchester City is growing in reputation as a global football powerhouse.  Recent sponsorship deals with Puma and Nissan reflect that fact.

The 2018/19 season was the second successive season when Manchester City had made more than £500 million in revenues. They experienced a sharp 7% increase in earnings.

Questions over Manchester City’s sponsorship arrangement with Etihad continues to lurk, however. Many critics have pointed out this to be a fraudulent way of investing owner money into the club.

While that is yet to be proved by financial analysts, you also need to be wary of the fact that City now has endorsement deals with some of the world’s most famous brands.

Besides Puma and Nissan, Manchester City’s sponsorship list includes names like EA Sports, Gatorade, SeatGeek, Tecno, UBTech, and many more.

The revenue growth trend is very promising for Manchester City. After the end of the 2014/15 season, their revenue was £351.8 million. Four seasons fast forward, that amount rose by more than 60%.

Final Say

Man City salaries and revenues resonate the club’s efforts to achieve self-sustenance. They have unlocked more revenue streams and have reduced their wage bill substantially in recent years.

But, they are not making any sacrifices on their on-the-pitch ambitions to do so. They are still keeping hold of their best players, and going after the right personnel to boost their squad strength.

What the club is doing differently, is that they have found a more efficient way of doing it. It is expanding its fanbase across the globe and trying to establish itself as a profitable organisation.
