Growing up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Deontay Wilder dreamt of lining up for the Alabama Crimson Tide and eventually making it to the NFL.

But, he had to give up his gridiron ambitions once his daughter Naieya came along.

Naieya was born with a spinal disorder. So, finding an immediate income source became priority number one for Wilder to bear her medical expenses.  

Therefore, Wilder had to drop out of Shelton State Community College and take up a host of jobs. A friend encouraged him to try out boxing.

Taking his advice, Wilder auditioned in a local gym and started training in 2005. 

Two years fast forward, Deontay Wilder claimed the National Golden Gloves and the US Championships at 201lb weight division.

He qualified for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and defeated Algeria’s Abdelaziz Toulbini and Morocco’s Mohamed Arjaoui before losing to Italian fighter Clemente Russo.

Their first encounter ended in a draw in 2018. The rematch took place in February, 2020 and Fury won the tie in the seventh round.
